The shape of the roster

California has thousands of bonded wineries; this roster holds 2772 of them, and every figure on this page describes the roster rather than the state.

A brand has no premises and no appellation by definition: 2539 of these rows are a label and the company that files for it, so the two middle figures count wineries almost entirely. A premises is mapped where the Census geocoder placed the address on the federal permit; it is a business address rather than a vineyard, and the wineries it fails on are not a random sample of them.

Where the roster is

Where the curation has gone, not where the wineries are. Napa County and Sonoma County hold 126 of the 164 rows that resolve to a county, because that is where this roster’s curation has concentrated. California has thousands of bonded wineries in every one of these counties.

A further 13 are filed under an appellation that crosses county lines and belongs to no one county — North Coast (2), Santa Cruz Mountains (2), Santa Maria Valley (2), South Coast (2), Clarksburg, Cucamonga Valley, Jahant, San Francisco Bay, Santa Clara Valley.

Wines are searchable by name from the masthead, and a result lands on the producer that makes it — a wine has no page of its own, because the producer’s page already draws it beside that winery’s appellation, map and soil. Verified is a narrow claim and a checked one: the winery’s own page is cached and read offline, and it has to name the wine or the build fails. Everything else is editorial and says so where it is shown.

What has been curated, not what California plants: Cabernet Sauvignon leads this list for the same reason Napa leads the one beside it.

One wine each: Barbera, Carignane, Counoise, Dolcetto, Gamay, Grenache Gris, Kerner, Malvasia Bianca, Marsanne, Mencia, Meunier, Muscadelle, Petit Manseng, Picpoul Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Tannat, Tocai Friulano, Touriga, Touriga Nacional, Verdelho.

468 name a style rather than a grape: a Bordeaux blend, a Rhône blend, a sparkling wine. They are published under the style the producer gives them rather than assigned a lead variety here.
