Editorial profile
Cakebread Cellars is a family-owned Rutherford winery founded in 1973 by Jack and Dolores Cakebread, who bought the property's 22-acre ranch in 1972 and released their first wine, a 1973 Chardonnay, the following year. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc have been central to the winery since that start, alongside a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon program built from a broad blend of sites across Rutherford, Oakville, Calistoga, and the Suscol watershed.
Beyond the estate-blend bottlings, Cakebread produces a run of single-vineyard designates — Vine Hill Ranch, Suscol Springs, Vaca, and Benchland Select among the Cabernets, Howell Mountain fruit for Dancing Bear, and Carneros and Anderson Valley sites (Tinsley, Cuttings Wharf, Two Creeks, Apple Barn, Annahala Ranch) for its Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Rosé. Three generations of the family have now run the winery, which passed to sons Bruce and Dennis Cakebread after Jack and Dolores stepped back in 2005.
