Entered at zero, whichever grape CDFA first named most recently would lead every ranking on this page for being new.
California’s bearing acres stood at 403,323 in 2000, 453,479 in 2020 and 424,104 in 2025 — a net loss of 29,375 acres over the short window. No grape gained as much as Chardonnay lost, so the two sides of that ranking are not the same size — it orders movement inside a shrinking crop rather than inside a growing one.
Held out as well, and named here rather than hidden: Other Red Wine +210 acres, Other White Wine +124 acres. CDFA sums the varieties too small to name individually under those headings, so their growth is a fact about the report’s own threshold rather than about a grape.

The coverage of this atlas
What follows counts this atlas’s own curation, not California’s vineyard. Coverage is uneven by three orders of magnitude, from Cabernet Sauvignon’s 1,170 county-years of acreage to a name and nothing else. That unevenness is what this plate reports.
85 of them get no page: table and raisin grapes, which the Crush and Acreage Reports name in their own sections. They are listed below and not linked, with the grape type as the reason — a raisin grape is not a gap in the wine list. Only 8 carry a modeled maturity date, because a published base-10 °C threshold exists for that many; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel are not among them.
