Charbono

Red wine grape · reported 2000–2025

Further reading: VIVC catalog entry

Charbono is a rare French red grape, linked historically to the Savoie region, that found an unlikely long-term home in Napa Valley, where a handful of producers have kept it going for decades. California's numbers back that up: bearing acreage has held roughly steady, from 52 acres in 2000 to 76 acres in the latest report, spread across 13 counties with one grower tech sheet on file, a small but durable planting rather than a fading one. It makes a dark, high-acid, tannic red, usually bottled as a single-variety wine by growers keeping the tradition alive.

What is published

Counts describe what this atlas holds for Charbono, not what California grows. A zero is a published answer: it means the source names the grape and reports nothing under it, or does not name it at all.
