Viognier is a French variety from the northern Rhone valley. California's bearing acreage climbed from 1,307 acres in 2000 to a peak of 2,532 five years ago before easing to 2,383 in 2025, spread across 38 counties. San Joaquin holds nearly 30 percent of the statewide total, with San Luis Obispo and Yolo next. It is an aromatic, full-bodied white, often bottled alone and occasionally co-fermented with Syrah, a traditional Rhone practice that carries over into some California blends.
