Nebbiolo is an Italian variety from Piedmont, the grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco. California's bearing acreage has been essentially flat at 142 acres for several years running through 2025, spread thinly across 24 counties, led by Santa Barbara, Madera, and Alameda. It is a late-ripening grape with high acid and firm tannin that is notoriously difficult to grow well outside Piedmont. In California it remains a niche planting for producers chasing a Barolo-style wine.
