Pinot Gris

White wine grape · reported 2000–2025

Further reading: VIVC catalog entry

Pinot Gris is a color-mutant sibling of Pinot Noir, a grayish-pink-skinned grape from France that makes a white wine, bottled in styles ranging from crisp and neutral, as Pinot Grigio, to richer and more textured, as Pinot Gris. California has planted it aggressively: bearing acreage grew from 940 acres in 2000 to 15,262 acres in the latest report, with 15,679 total acres logged for 2025 across 37 counties, one of the fastest-growing white varieties in the state's own numbers. It is grown here mostly for the lighter, high-volume Pinot Grigio style rather than the richer Alsatian one.

What is published

Counts describe what this atlas holds for Pinot Gris, not what California grows. A zero is a published answer: it means the source names the grape and reports nothing under it, or does not name it at all.
