Tannat is a French variety from the southwest, best known as the principal grape of Madiran. California's bearing acreage has slipped slightly, from 622 acres five years ago to 576 in 2025, spread across 20 counties, led by Sacramento, San Joaquin, and Yolo. It carries very high tannin and deep color. In California it is grown almost entirely for bold, structured varietal reds rather than as a blending grape.
