Emerald Riesling

White wine grape · reported 2000–2016

Further reading: VIVC catalog entry

Emerald Riesling is a UC Davis cross of Muscadelle and Grenache, bred by Harold Olmo to deliver an aromatic, Riesling-like white that could still thrive in California's hot inland valleys. CDFA's ledger shows bearing acreage falling sharply, from 424 acres near 2000 to just 51 acres by 2016, planted in Fresno, Kern, and Napa counties, with reporting ending after 2016. Crush volumes were once significant, peaking at about 2,163 tons in a year, before dropping to nothing. Like other Olmo heat-tolerant crosses, it was designed for bulk production in the Central Valley rather than boutique bottling.

What is published

Counts describe what this atlas holds for Emerald Riesling, not what California grows. A zero is a published answer: it means the source names the grape and reports nothing under it, or does not name it at all.
