California's bearing acreage is small and declining, from 84 acres five years ago to 75 in 2025, spread across 12 counties led by Riverside, San Luis Obispo, and El Dorado. It is a late-ripening grape with firm tannin and high acidity. In California it remains a minor planting for producers working with warm-climate Italian red varieties.
