Sangiovese

Red wine grape · reported 2000–2025

Further reading: VIVC catalog entry

Sangiovese is an Italian variety from Tuscany; VIVC records list several competing proposals for its exact parentage rather than a single confirmed pedigree. California's bearing acreage has roughly halved since 2000, from 2,802 to 1,315 acres in 2025, spread thinly across 39 counties, led by Sonoma, San Luis Obispo, and Amador. It is a high-acid, moderately tannic grape, grown in California mostly by producers making lighter, Italian-style reds rather than as a blending component.

What is published

Counts describe what this atlas holds for Sangiovese, not what California grows. A zero is a published answer: it means the source names the grape and reports nothing under it, or does not name it at all.
