Muscat Hamburg is a British-bred cross of Schiava Grossa and Muscat of Alexandria, historically grown as a table grape known as Black Muscat for its dark skin and intense floral aroma. California's numbers show a rise and fall: bearing acreage grew from 71 acres in 2000 to a peak of 299 acres five years before the present, then fell back to 169 acres in the latest report, spread across 15 counties. Where it reaches a winery rather than the table, it makes a deeply perfumed, often sweet red or dessert wine.
