Touriga Nacional is a Portuguese variety, the principal grape of Port. California's bearing acreage has grown slowly, from 293 acres five years ago to 325 in 2025, spread across 21 counties led by San Joaquin, Sacramento, and San Luis Obispo. It produces small, thick-skinned berries with deep color and firm tannin. In California it is grown as a small planting for structured, deeply colored dry varietal reds rather than for fortified wine.
