Editorial profile

Ruth Lewandowski Wines is based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and sources fruit entirely from Northern California — mostly Mendocino County, with reach into the Sierra Foothills and the tiny, single-owner Cole Ranch AVA.

The wines are named for figures from the Book of Ruth and built around old-vine, often obscure sites: Boaz blends Carignan, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon from Testa Vineyard's century-old plantings; Naomi is a white cuvée from Gibson Ranch's old-vine Grenache Gris, reputedly the oldest documented planting of that variety in the US; Elimelech is a dry-farmed Riesling off Cole Ranch's limestone soils; and Dinos to Diamonds and the winery's Rosé both draw on Rorick Heritage Vineyard in Calaveras County, the former built around Picpoul and the latter incorporating Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) from the 2018 vintage forward. Mahlon, Chilion and Feints draw on Fox Hill Vineyard's library of obscure Italian and Portuguese varieties, planted from nursery selections and "suitcased" cuttings.
