Editorial profile
Moraga Vineyards sits at 550-900 feet elevation in the Santa Monica Mountains, within the Los Angeles community of Bel-Air — not to be confused with any Ballard Canyon producer of a similar name. Tom and Ruth Jones planted the vineyard in 1983 and released the first commercial vintage in 1989; a winery completed in 2005 made it one of the first wineries bonded within the city of Los Angeles since Prohibition.
Rupert Murdoch purchased the estate in 2013. The tiny production runs to just two wines: a Bordeaux-style estate red led by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and an estate Sauvignon Blanc from a 1.2-acre block. Tastings are by appointment only and wines are sold direct to consumer.
