Editorial profile

Harlan Estate is a winegrowing estate in the western hills of Oakville, Napa Valley, founded in 1984 by H. William Harlan with the stated aim of producing a California "First Growth." The 240-acre property rises from 225 to 1,225 feet in elevation, with 40 acres under vine planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot on hillside sites over volcanic and sedimentary bedrock. Harlan Estate, the winery's flagship proprietary red, is its principal wine; The Maiden is the estate's second selection, described by the winery as remaining faithful to the vineyard's character.
